Make Your Own (Edible) Play Dough
Ew, you may not like the flavor, but your kids will be none the worse for eating these three simple recipes. Each recipe uses ingredients most likely found in your pantry. Your kids will love to help too. Homemade play dough is a frugal answer for Sunday school teachers and daycare providers in search of inexpensive supplies.
Recipe #1
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
a few drops of food color, peppermint extract or lemon oil
Sift dry ingredients together in a sauce pan. Add liquid ingredients and cook over medium heat until the mixture pulls apart from the sides of the pan, approximately 3 to 4
minutes. Knead dough. Store in an airtight container.
Recipe #2
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
one package of unsweetened Koolaid
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water
Follow the steps in recipe #1. The koolaid gives the play dough a vibrant color and a semi-fruity flavor, if you want to taste it.
Recipe #3
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup salt
3/4 cup boiling water
Mix the ingredients, knead once or twice. Refrigerate until cold. This recipe makes dough that is great for sculpting or molding. Leave creation out until dry, then paint.
